Mohican River Info
April 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 2010

The plan is to canoe-camp for 3 or 4 nights while paddling 52 miles on the Mohican River, from Charles Mill Reservoir to the Mohawk Dam.

Thursday evening, April 8th, we can camp just downstream of the Charles Mill Dam on property own by the Wayside Inn. This bar-lounge has 2 ball diamonds on their land and there is also a fire ring. There are toilet facilities at Charles Mill Lake Recreation Area, at the dam, off S.R. 603. That's maybe 200 yards from our camping area. I as far as I know now, the camping is free here.

Friday we would paddle 17 miles to Loudenville and the River Run Campground 419-994-5257. This is a full service campground and could be a base camp for any one not wanting to camp along the river. Owner Rick said we can camp for free that time of the year and there are flush toilets 60 yards from the tent area. No showers at that time.

Saturday would be a 15 mile trip downstream to the Joy of Ministries Church Camp 1-888-849-4340, where toilets are available. We would camp along the river where there are fire rings and free firewood. The cost per person would be $8.00 per night. 1-2 miles further downstream would bring us to Brinkhaven where there is public land with parking for shuttle vehicles for anyone wanting to go back to River Run and camp. No facilities at the parking area.

Sunday we could paddle around 9 miles to the Walhonding Hills Campground 740-824-4575 (Terry Lowe). There will be port-a-pots available, fire rings and again camping is $8.00 per person. That's a total paddle of 41 miles to this point. Or we could paddle 20 miles this day to The Mohawk Dam which has a Corp of Engineers campground.

Monday we could finish the last 11 miles from Walhonding Hills Campground to the Mohawk Dam or just stop where the Mohican joins the Kokosing River, maybe 2-3 miles. Playing it by ear!

The USGS stream gauge at Charles Mill Dam was at 2.82 when I scouted and the river looked great.

I am trying to gauge the interest in this early season self contained trip. Please let me know your status as soon as you can. I will post more information as it becomes available.
