Tony and Wil's Wilderness Adventure
Day Three

We slept in today not getting up until after 7:00am. There was a beautiful mist rising off the lake while we had our morning drinks and just lounged. I wanted to see Lac La Croix and wet a fishing line. Why does the lakes name sound like "Lake La Croy"? A-X is ax; O-X is ox, why does I-X sound like oy? Wil had to say it 15-20 times before I got it right. Dam French! We paddled up Pocket Creek, portaged 20 rods and pulled over a beaver dam to reach the lake. Lac La Croix is very huge and we were only in one arm. I fished and caught two little pike which we decided to keep for lunch. I like pike with their nice firm flesh. Much better tasting than bass if only there weren't so many little bones. Wrapped in foil and cooked with clarified butter and Wil's Gunpowder seasoning I was in heaven. The campsite directly across the portage on the north shore was burnt out. We used the latrine and saw burnt and dead trees all over. Couldn't tell how far it extended away from the campsite. Was it a campfire goin bad or a full fledged forest fire?

Brown Trees

Back at camp it was hot with the sun just a blazin on us. We erected the tarp as a sun shield and it worked great. There was a resident snapping turtle, about 12 inches around that kept visiting us. I feel he or she must have been fed in the past and was looking for handouts. Wil wants to call it "If he comes back tomorrow we will call him two socks." We still had Pocket Lake all to ourselves and the solitude was wonderful. No man made sounds disturbed our peace of tranquilly. We relaxed with Happy Hour but had one major problem... we ran the bar dry. Guess we just got too relaxed. Supper was dehydrated egg, sausage, hash browns and cheese. Another great sunset on now mirror, smooth waters and with the moon rising it just accented our campsite. Total mileage for the day was 5.76.
