River Facts
Ashtabula- The Iroquois called the Ashtabula River "Hash-tah-buh-lah", meaning "river of many fish".
Auglaize- The name of this river comes from a Shawnee phrase meaning "fallen timbers".
Black- The Black River was named that by the Indians because the water was so dark. The settlers translated the name to English, and it has been Black ever since.
Blanchard- This river is named for Jean Jacques Blanchard, a French tailor who settled among the Shawnee along the river in 1769.
Chagrin- Shawnee for clear water or a description of the surrounding sycamore trees.
Conneaut Creek-
Cuyahoga- Crooked river.
Darby Creek- Named after the Wyandot Indian, Chief Darby
Fremont- Explorer John C. Fremont.
Grand-
Greenville Creek- General Nathaniel Greene.
