They woke to a cool morning, but with a weather forecast of mid 50's and partial sunshine, the six paddlers soon rendezvoused at Axtons Landing, on the Raquette River. After shuttling vehicles, the OHCRA members started paddling, upstream. Up to Stoney Creek, where they paddled 1.2 miles to an old campsite that Larry and Sophia used to camp in. But with a new road bridge recently installed, the campsite was wiped off the face of the Earth.
Turning and heading downstream, they paddled 8.7 miles to a fishing access site with a boat ramp. Motor boats are allowed on the Raquette and they did see one. The weather teased them as it never really warmed up nor did they see much sun.
At the take out Larry produced cold beers to celebrate the end of our canoeing adventure. Good byes were said and Larry and Sophia headed back to their hotel and the four campers to camp. The hotelers were leaving for Rochester in the morning and the campers were heading home.
After a supper of corned beef and black beans over baked potatoes the left-right-center game came out. Time for some gambling, which didn't last long as Harold had two Java Logs left to burn. These logs were made of coffee and produced flames for a long time. They just do not put out much heat. Our last day in New York and no rain fell the whole day. It seemed very late in the early darkness and everyone was in their warm sleeping bags by 9:30.
